Vale Bruce Jackson

Bruce Jackson

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Bruce Jackson, one of the two founders of Jands.

Along with his school friend Philip Storey, Bruce formed J & S Research Electronics in the late 1960s, the company which soon became known as Jands.

In 1970, Bruce sold his share of Jands and went to America, where he did live sound for performers such as Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen and Barbara Streisand. Bruce went on to become one of the pioneers of the live audio industry, working with Clair Brothers Audio, Apogee Electronics and Lake Technology to develop many sound technologies we take for granted today.

Bruce will be sorely missed by his many friends around the world, and by those of us at Jands who knew him from the early days, or who got to know him more recently through his involvement with the Sydney Olympics and other major events.

Our heartfelt condolences to Bruce’s family and to all who knew him, worked with him and appreciated his immense contribution to the audio industry.

Shocked. I once sat next to Bruce on a flight from Nashville to LA where we were delayed on the tarmac for and hour. Didn’t know who he was. Got chatting when I saw he was reading Audio magazines. He told me so many amazing stories. Ie, when he was very young on tour with Elvis. The king called for him in middle of the night and asked him to ‘fix’ the bad audio on his plane and gave Bruce a $50000 cheque . Bruce replaced the intercom speakers with good quality music speakers for around $1000. Bruce tried to give back $49000 but Elvis was so pleased with the job he insisted Bruce “keep the change”. !!!!! Bruce was very genuine and a lovely man RIP

Knew him briefly when I worked for Lou Reed on tour in the 70s. He did the sound for Clair Bros in Australia and he was amazing. Great stories about Elvis , ex: Elvis was annoyed that a construction worker was always late due to car troubles, so Elvis had a truck arrive full of new pickups and insisted the guy pick out a car. Bruce was such a gentleman, I wish I had gotten in touch with him over the years. I was Lou’s tour manager for those years and ran into Bruce once in NYC at a restaurant, tall, with long blond hair, so young and so smart. Sigh
